The Struggle is REAL!

Being an interior designer.

December 23, 2016

Since starting my business, one question I’m often asked is: what are the biggest struggles in the interior design profession, and how do you deal with them?

The truth is, like any creative business, there are challenges — but each one has taught me something valuable.

1. Finding Clients
When you’re just starting out, finding projects is by far the hardest part. It takes time, energy, and investment. I spent countless hours attending public and private events, reaching out through emails, introducing myself, and putting money into marketing. Once you find a client, the next challenge is making sure the project is something you’re genuinely excited about. If you don’t love the type of work — whether it’s residential, commercial, or hospitality — the final result will show it. Passion is everything in design.

2. Proving Your Value
After finding the right clients, the next question is: how much should I charge? With so much competition — especially from online design platforms — it can be tough to communicate the real value of your work. In the beginning, this was a huge struggle for me. Why should a client trust someone new to the industry? But over time, once they saw not only my designs but also my professionalism and dedication, trust followed. In fact, many of my clients realized what they really wanted was a fresh, modern perspective — not something outdated or cookie-cutter.

3. Keeping Clients Happy
At the end of the day, interior design isn’t like tech startups where investors keep you afloat. Your business is built on relationships. Happy clients and word of mouth are what bring in new projects — always. That’s why my number one goal is simple: to make sure every client loves their finished space. Their excitement and satisfaction are the best marketing I could ever ask for.

To anyone dreaming of starting their own interior design firm, here’s my advice: don’t wait until everything feels perfect. You’ll never learn how to swim if you don’t jump into the water. Start today, take the risk, and go after the dream you’ve always had.
